We are pleased to welcome Ahmad Altaleb, a consultant in Forensic Anthropology with the National Commission of Missing Persons (NCMP) in Syria, for our next BAFA webinar on Syria’s Missing: Context and Search.
Ahmad brings a unique perspective to this work, combining a background in forensic and physical anthropology with more than a decade of experience in human rights documentation and working with families of forcibly disappeared and missing persons. Having recently returned to Syria to support the NCMP, he is now contributing to the development of forensic anthropology and archaeology within the country’s emerging missing persons response. During the webinar, Ahmad will share insights into the particular challenges of searching for and identifying the missing in Syria, and the developing role of forensic expertise in this process. This promises to be a valuable opportunity for members to hear directly from someone working within this evolving context and to reflect on the opportunities and challenges of applying our field to the search for the missing.
About Ahmad:
Ahmad is a consultant in Forensic Anthropology with the National Commission of Missing Persons (NCMP) in Syria. He holds a B.Sc. in Biology and is currently completing an M.Sc. in Physical Anthropology at the University of Damascus, Faculty of Biology. He was unable to complete his M.Sc. in 2012 after being detained by the security forces due to his human rights activism. While residing in Spain, he returned to academic study in Forensic and Physical Anthropology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM).
Between 2013 and 2024, Ahmad worked in the documentation of human rights violations in Syria and supported the establishment of associations representing families of forcibly disappeared persons, victims of chemical weapons, and families of missing migrants. He has now returned to Syria to support the NCMP’s work in forensic anthropology and archaeology. He also co-authored the first Arabic-language guide to forensic sciences related to the search for the missing in Syria.
